How do Websites Accept Payments?

Online businesses have become very popular and very successful over the years.  Just 30 years ago they didn’t exist and now we are full of hugely successful online corporations like eBay and Amazon.  Regular corporations also allow purchasing online as well as in store such as Walmart, Best Buy, and Barnes & Noble.

In addition to large corporations, there are many small businesses as well that sell products and services online.  They might sell real products or e-products such as eBooks.  Or, they might sell services of any kind.  For example, some brick and mortar businesses have a website to help promote their own services.

Either way, many online businesses sell things and must have a way to accept payment.  Obviously, they can’t accept cash.  Sending a check or money order through the mail isn’t a good idea either.  It takes a very long time and isn’t very secure for the customer or the seller.  In this case, most businesses accept credit cards.

In order to accept credit cards, the business must have a merchant account.  A merchant account will process the transaction and then the money will be sent to a business a few days later.  When you enter in your credit card information, they process that transaction for the business.  That makes things much easier and simpler for the business and for you.
